It was a rainy, sleety, grey overpowering night in London. The January wind required greatcoats to keep it out, and Guiness to ease the cold...Such was the night of P.A.I.N.'s birth, in the gloomy corners of a notorious boozer, the much loved Archduke Charles, at the Elephant and Castle, South London.
 It was the early days of 95, the criminal justice bill had just become the Criminal Justice Act, and the free festivals had died like poisoned fish that summer in it's wake...The bands that had made the free festivals their natural home were also imploding fast, as the scene and circuit went belly up. There was a period in late 94 when all the bands, possibly a scene including over 100 band names suddenly started to split, one by one...Now it was the start of '95, that xmas the same thing had happened to me...AOS3 had finally torn itself apart in a rage of typical hometown natures, and I was left the option of trying again, from Sunderland, or shifting roots
 2 days later I was on the coach to London.Within 2 days me and Phil met in the Archduke Charles, for a pint and a chew of the crack. He had only just quit RDF for his own reasons, after a five year stint. When i went to meet him, it was certainly with the sly intention of forming a band, but when we got there, the beer started flowing, and we both started describibg to each other what our next bands were going to be like...The gulf between our visions was big, enormous in fact... I had almost given up on the idea, when Brutal Martin appeared at the bar....(for those of you who do not know Brutal Martin yet, trust me, you will...the man will pass into legend as surely as Neal Cassady, of whom he seems to be some Dublin version.) Within 2 minutes he came over to us, and without batting an eyelid said
 "So when can I get you Boys to do a gig, then?"
Five minutes later we had the first gig booked for 5 days time. In that time I went home, we had 2 practises, and proceeded to start gigging whilst writing the material. In the first week we did three gigs. By our ninth gig we were playing to 1000 people in Portsmouth, still pretty much making it up as we went along. It's never really changed since then, really, one long chaotic romp through punk rock and reggae, although we do tend to write the songs now, rather than make them up. Not always though!

1)How long has the band been together , and who came up with the name?
       A.The Band will be starting it's 7th year in January 2001. The name was originally the title of an autonomous promotion company run by John's old Band, AOS3.

2)Have any of you been in previous bands ?
       A. John is the lead singer from ASO3 and Danny, Ossy and Phil are from RDF. Our sax player is from the Seminal Nose Flute Essemble......... EARWIG

3)What releases do you have to date ?
       A. There are 3 old live tapes, 2 now available on CD.( On No 'Bones Records' which is run by John.)The first LP is available on CD and Vinyl + 2 CD EPs and the new LP is available in Jan 2001.(Out on P.A.I.NRecords which is sometimes licensed to Iron Man Records, Birmingham.)

4)Describe your sound to anyone not familiar with P.A.I.N ?
       A. How do you describe the colour of saffron to a Blind Man..???? If it's pigeon holes you want then we are Nuclear Dub, Genetically Modified Ska and B.S.E. laced Punk Rock.

5)Has any of the band been in Jail ?
       A. Our solicitors have advised us not to comment on this.!!

6)Do you buy zines, if so which ones ?
       A. The last one we read collectively was a Black Magic Zine with a serious article on how to raise the dead. Beware the Corpse Froth

7)Any of the band got a job ?
       A.Does professional 'Thorn in the Side' classify as a job..??

       A. We try to rationalise anything and trust nothing, but in 1987 John saw three bizarre lights over South Wales, which were confirmed by reports in the Mirror and the Sun, so it must be true...!?

       A. Phil," hands up, it's a fair cop govnor, I used to get it ordered from our local news agents". John " never heard of it..!"

The Bigger Picture

For those of you who do not know P.A.I.N in a live sense, or from the first album, it may be of help to you to know where we're coming from. To understand this music and its lyrical content, it is almost essential that you understand P.A.I.N are very much a 'traditional' British Free Festival Band, which is in itself a huge and very grand tradition. On the circuit at the moment this torch is still borne by numerous other 'festy' bands, of many different styles, but with a very similar ideology and persperctive. To name check just a few, look out for Headmix Collective, Inner Terrestrials, Tragic Roundabout, Zion Train, Citizen Fish, Ruby Throat and many many more...

The festival tradition in England is more threatened than it has ever been, but survives in our mind and music. It represents a whole lot more than three days in the countryside drunk and wasted. The festival tradition stands for the right for individuals to spontaneously meet and celebrate and create, utterly free from the constraints of bureaucraty or societies permission. This should be a human right, and we can easily point to over 30 years of history which proves it to be a valuable, life-changing experience. Since the Criminal Justice Act come into play we have lost many of the traditional free festivals, but P.A.I.N are determined they will not be lost forever..............

The reason the festivals are so important is that they are where the disparate tribes of various Youth Culture Movements met, and talked and realised that they had far more in common, however their hair cuts differed! P.A.I.N have been very honoured this year to meet the pioneers of the Old Albion Fayre's, and other crucial first festivals and it is still obvious that despite the generation gaps, we are all of a common culture of resistence and postivity. So in the 60's and 70's the hippy movement started the ball rolling, and definitely achieved many worthy goals, for all of the 'accepted' version of history of them lunching everything out in an Acid Haze. The Punk Movement shot a new burst of adrenalin into the youth, and by the time these two met at Stonehenge in the early eighties, it became obvious that there was still plenty of middle ground. By the time the third wave came into play in the 90's the media were wise to their intentions, and neatly christened the new kids 'Crusties', aware that to label something was to slightly disempower it... Of course, 'Crusties' as they chose to call us, were nothing more than the total synthesis of Punks and Hippies, the middle ground of the Festival Tradition. The Media had to do this, to make light of the new solidarity. And in its place they offered us Brit-Pop and Boy bands. I apologise that I haven't placed Techno in a position of importance, but I think the problem with Techno parties is that they have not, to my knowledge, fixated their attention on anything other than the dancing and drugs. The Festival philosophy certainly extends much further than that in comparison, and perhaps I can vainly appeal for a new militancy and awareness from dance music?

Now to the point, P.A.I.N have decided in the absence of anyone else ranting about reclaiming the Free Festivals, to do it ourselves. It is our intention to do everything in our power to kick-start the old festival calendar again. We feel it is vital for the grass-roots, and for a wider understanding of the glorious tradition that has produced so many life-changing Acts and experiences. Summer 2001 is, as far as we're concerned, the time we take it all back.

PROPAGANDA AND INFORMATION NETWORK (P.A.I.N.)
Selten so wenig Informationen über eine interessante Band im Vorfeld gehabt, wie über die britische Anarcho-Dubpunkband P.A.I.N.: PROPAGANDA AND INFORMATION NETWORK. Spätestens seit dem Dirty Faces Jubiläum in Mühlheim in diesem Jahr wurde mir klar, diese Band muss ihren Namen gerecht werden,  zudem im Dezember noch eine Deutschlandtour ansteht, die ihr wirklich nicht verpassen solltet! Es dauerte eine Weile, bis der Kontakt zur Band ausfindig gemacht war, dann aber führte ich doch noch ein Telefonat mit Gründungsmitglied, Sänger und Gitarrist Phil...
1995 gegründet, spielten John (Keyboard/Vocals), ex-Vocalist der Band AOS3 (Augustus Owsley Stanley III), Phil (Guitars/Vocals), Ozzy (Bass/Vocals) und Dan (Drums/Vocals) innerhalb weniger Jams ein Set ein, das sie nur kurze Zeit später in der Hausbesetzerszene zum Besten gaben. Widmete sich die junge Generation dem zeitgemäßen Skapunk, zeigt Phil dafür nur mäßig Interesse: „Lalala, I Love You?! Nein, das haut mich nicht um! Unser Sound ähnelt dem der RUTS oder THE CLASH“ , was ihnen in England die Bezeichnung „THE CLASH of the nineties“ einbrachte. Mit 38 Jahren auf dem Buckel, weiß Phil von den Anfängen zu berichten: „Punkrock war ein Boom. John Lydon war ziemlich unbeliebt, was mir mit 12 oder 13 großartig gefiel. Als ich dann noch die ersten Sachen von den SEX PISTOLS, X-RAY SPEX oder THE CLASH hörte, war ich einfach nur noch hin und weg von dieser ehrlichen Art. Punkrock hat dieses Unnahbare der beschissenen Stadionbands zerstört. Irgendjemand läuft auf die Bühne, schnappt sich das Mikro und schreit einfach mit. Natürlich hat sich zwischenzeitlich viel verändert und es wird auch nie mehr so sein, dennoch gibt es immer wieder junge Bands, mit denen wir gemeinsam spielen, die mich selbst nach 25 Jahren Punk durchaus begeistern.“
Was es mit der Bandbezeichnung P.A.I.N. auf sich hat, erklärt Phil so: „Im Vordergrund steht die Musik. Dennoch, als Undergroundband wollten wir als Propaganda- und Informationsnetzwerk auftreten, damit den Leuten diverse Geschehnisse und Berichte mitgeteilt werden. Das Netzwerk für diverse anarchistische Gruppierungen in Europa.“ Trotz des Namens, stehen sie den Medien selbst kritisch gegenüber. So arbeiten P.A.I.N. zwar an einer eigenen Homepage, dennoch ist die selbsternannte „independent, not-for-profit disorganisation“ Iron Man Records in Birmingham, ihre Plattenfirma, nicht gerade ein mustergültiges Beispiel für aktuelle Informationen. Zu Songs wie „Schtum“ oder „Riot“ ergänzt Phil: “Der Große Bruder ist allgegenwärtig! Es geht um die Unterwanderung der Privatsphäre. Zudem kann es so nicht länger weitergehen. Während immer weniger Leute alles besitzen, gibt es für die restliche Menschheit nur noch die Bombe. Was muss noch alles passieren, bis sich etwas ändert? Eines wird dabei klar, es muss sich etwas ändern.“ Ähnlich wie bei CITIZEN FISH, die heute immer noch als ex-SUBHUMANS angekündigt werden, fanden die früheren Bandbezeichnungen vor allem in Deutschland in den Medien gerne Verwendung, wenngleich P.A.I.N. davon nicht immer angetan waren, wie Phil anmerkt: “Heute, nach acht Jahren geht das in Ordnung, vor allem wenn es sich dabei um einen Veranstaltungsort handelt, an dem wir bisher noch nicht gespielt haben. Am Anfang, als wir des öfteren in Deutschland spielten, waren wir von derartigen Vorankündigungen auf Plakaten ziemlich angepisst. Schließlich sind das nur Bezeichnungen und haben mit P.A.I.N. wenig zu tun.“  1996 wird die erste Platte mit dem Titel „Oh My God, We’re Doing It...“ unter dem bandeigenem Label P.A.I.N. Records produziert und unter Iron Man Records, deren Lizenzen man für alle weiteren Veröffentlichungen übertrug, veröffentlicht. Cover sowie das P.A.I.N.-Labellogo ist mit dem anarchistischen Tintin aus dem Buch „Rising Free“ verewigt. “Tintin ist normalerweise ein Vollidiot! Durch das Buch, in dem Tintin zum Anarchisten wird, kam die Anregung, sowohl das Cover als auch das Labellogo, Anarchisten-T-Shirts und dergleichen zu machen“, berichtet Phil amüsiert darüber. Trotz einiger Livetapes, die über das Label Iron Man Records erhältlich sind, erscheint erst im Juli 2000 ihr zweites Studioalbum „Our Commences Starts Here“, mit Unterstützung von Percussionisten und Saxophonisten Steu. „Der Titel entstand während der Aufnahmen, nachdem die Cannabisgesetze in England geändert wurden. Es war das ‚Aus’ für uns, nachdem wir uns so sehr für die Legalisierung von Cannabis in England einsetzen. Das Cover-Artwork zeigt einen Menschen in der Gefängniszelle. Jedes Bandmitglied war bereits inhaftiert. Man hat viel Zeit die Geschehnisse zu reflektieren und wie das System mit dir umgeht“, wie mir Phil darüber Auskunft gibt. Besteht das gesamte Werk „O.U.C.H.“ aus anarchischen Momenten, ist vor allem aber Cannabis das Thema Nummer Eins, wovon unter anderem „Rocking Cross De Borda“ erzählt: „Wir waren in Prag/CZ und spielten einen Gig in einem besetzen Haus. In der Regel haben wir immer etwas zu Rauchen, aber an diesem Abend hatten wir nichts mehr im Gepäck. Nach dem Auftritt sprach uns ein Typ um ein paar Platten an, teilte uns aber mit, dass er uns kein Geld aber Gras anbieten könnte - Ein Sack voll mit sehr gutem Zeug, den wir in der Bassdrum über die Grenze nach Deutschland schmuggelten.“  Widmet man sich dem Cover-Artwork genauer, so entdeckt man den Namen der exzentrischen Pop-Artistin Kate Bush, deren 1985 aufgenommener Song „Cloudbusting“ als Sample zu P.A.I.N.’s themenverwandten Song „Eastern Dub (Wilheim Reich In Hell) bestens geeignet war, wie in diesem Zusammenhang Phil erklärt: „Wilheim Reichs wissenschaftliche Arbeiten und die Erfindung des Orgonakkumulators führten in den USA so weit, dass seine Aufzeichnungen, Bücher und Veröffentlichungen vernichtet wurden und er amtlich als verrückt erklärt wurde. Da Kate Bushs ‚Cloudbusting’ und ‚Eastern Dub’ ein ähnliches Thema verbindet haben wir uns diesem Sample bedient, ohne mit der Genehmigung der EMI zu rechnen.“ Trotz gesetzlicher Rückschlage betreffend der Legalisierung von Cannabis in England, lassen sich P.A.I.N. nicht entmutigen und veröffentlichen Mitte 2001 die Benefizsingle „(Let Me) Grow More Weed“ mit Howard Marks, von dem mir John folgendes erzählt: “Howard Marks ist aus den 60ern und 70ern bekannt, den jeder Haschischraucher in Europa kennt. Er hat Tausende Kilogramm an Ware verbreitet, wurde festgenommen und inhaftiert. Er schrieb über sein Leben und wurde durch sein Buch (das sich übrigens millionenfach verkauft hat und in vielen Sprachen übersetzt wurde) berühmt, so dass er heute auf Veranstaltungen spricht. Letztes Jahr waren wir und Howard Marks auf einem Cannabis-Festival gemeinsam eingeladen, wir kamen ins Gespräch, er besuchte uns daraufhin im Studio und ziemlich stoned spielten wir den Song ‚Grow More Weed’ ein. Die ‚Grow More Weed CamP.A.I.N.’ haben wir selbst ins Leben gerufen“ Neben der Vinylversion auf Dirty Faces, gibt es noch eine Maxi-CD und ein Video von der Liveperformance von besagtem Festivalgig.
Wollte John bereits nach der ersten Platte aufgrund Verwirklichung eigener Pläne die Band verlassen, vollzog sich dieser Weggang zwar erst Anfang 2002, nachdem die Aufnahmen zur Benefit-Single mit Haschischguru Howard Marks eingespielt waren, dennoch schienen ihm sieben Jahre definitiv zu viel Zeit für ein einziges Projekt gewesen zu sein, auch wenn John in einem Interview für ein Online-Magazin äußerte, dass er 2006 mit dem fünften P.A.I.N.-Album beschäftigt sei, und als Headliner in der Brixton Academy spielen würde. Bis dahin können noch viele Joints gebaut und geraucht werden. Dennoch kann man guter Dinge sein, denn Phil schreibt an neuen Songs, die voraussichtlich im Frühjahr 2003 aufgenommen werden und im Laufe des Jahres auf Platte erscheinen sollen. Zum Stand meiner Dinge bis Redaktionsschluss dieses Textes, war Mitte Dezember 2002 eine Deutschlandtour geplant, auf der der eine oder andere neue Song im Set dabei sein soll. Also, checkt die Tourdaten und lasst euch derart einzigartiges Konzerterlebnis nicht entgehen, denn selten habe ich so ein aggressives und singfreudiges Publikum erlebt, als am 26.04. diesen Jahres im Mühlheimer AZ, worüber Phil nüchtern zu berichten weiß: “Du, wir machen das jetzt acht Jahre lang!“ Auf dass es noch einige Jahre mehr werden...
