Led by Seth Faergolzia , Dufus are the race of beings Tolkien forgot to mention, benevolent mountain giants with piercing blue eyes, they stalk the stage with anti-electricity and sing/gurgle/scat in anti-english. They want to bring “death to monotony”. One of Kimya Moldy Peach’s 3 favourite NY bands. A rotating collective of musicians with up to 14 players onstage. Tonight expect 8 or 9. If you’re a fan of this band you get to shout out for ‘wee ma moo, wor ma moo’ , ‘fun loving underwear’ or ‘more girl cops’. Go to google.com and search for ‘dufus crud’ for an interview. “controlled confusion orchestrated by the genius mind of a madman. Abstract and unconventional, kind of like a modern day Frank Zappa…they improvise a lot on stage…they’ll scream and yell, harmonise, talk and make strange noises and it all comes together to make sense in a twisted irregular way…the farthest thing from the spoon-fed faeces that radio and MTV and mass media have been feeding us forever. It’s grimy,it’s odd, it’s strange, it’s different, it’s real, and that is what makes it so damn special.” (Don Sill, Crud magazine) HERMAN DUNE are Paris-based Swedish brothers David-Ivar Herman Dune and Andre Herman Dune. In 2000 they released 1st album ‘Turn Off The Light’ and visited the UK to stun audiences with their music and personality. Claiming vegetarian ethics from a candle lit stage the Herman Dunes gave extraordinary performances, at the 12 Bar one of the brothers jumping offstage to punch an audience member aggrieved at their veggie stance. They then toured Europe and the US. In April 2001 Shrimper, the notorious Californian label that released Lou Barlow and Yo La Tengo’s 1st recordings, compiled unreleased Dune songs to make their 2nd album ‘They Go To The Woods’. Their 3rd album ‘Switzerland Heritage’ (2001) is a folk-rock manifesto, the Silvertone guitars now augmented by new member Neman on drums and arrangements of violin, organ, horns and harmonica. “This year’s most criminally overlooked gem, ‘Turn Off The Light’ – a magnificently grimy debut that recalls the Palace Brothers, Belle and Sebastian and rather more bizarrely, Serge Gainsbourg” (NME) “Sparse as scrubland, cool as a low-budget indie movie, sad and childlike and utterly hypnotic” (TimeOut) Herman Dune record their 4th Peel session on May 15. Dog Food: 12 albums to be released in one day but only for one day after 16 year career to date. Dog Food are a Birmingham Based band playing a bizarre mix of surreal/Dada original songs in a patchwork of styles ranging from Charlestons to punk rock. The Bonzo Dog Band meets the Fall. They represent the most worrying face of English eccentricity to have emminated from the Midlands area since the late Bronze Age. Formed in 1985 they have evolved through a number of incarnations into a local legend with an obsessively loyal following. A true underground act, they have consistantly shunned 'product' in favour of a tireless live career, releasing only one studio album thus far in 1992 called 'Remasters'... a collection of digitally remastered tracks from the previous three years that had never been released in the first place. In honour of the third Discordian Confluence, to be held at the Old Railway on May 12th, where they will be playing on an International bill of lo-fi heroes including Dufus from New York, Herman Dune form Paris and local heroes Misty's Big Adventure, they have finally bowed to public pressure and agreed to release, for one day only 'the next twelve albums'. The launch of these albums also represents the first product from a new Midlands based lo-fi label called Lobstervision, and after this one night only event their website at http://www.lobstervision.co.uk will be the only place the public will be able to purchase these twelve gems. Although there are rumours of a second studio album (a track from which was recently previewed on a compilation album from Awkward Records, with airplay from John Peel) and a single later this year, this characteristically bizarre (and commercially suicidal) stunt is true to their live roots. The twelve albums were taken from live tracks recorded between 1985 and the present and provide a catalogue of their chaotic and unlikely career. Some of the most important musicians of the period have served time in Dog Food, yet the band have staunchly avoided the limelight while proudly admitting that those who have gone on to the public view are still part of the mighty Dog Food tribe. The CDs that will be launched as the Audio Diary Series on Lobstervision on the 12th of May are as follows: PEACOCKS (1985) CHEAP IMPORT (1989) PINK IS THE NEW PURPLE (1989) POP-A-DOODLE-DON'T (1984) THE DRAB OLD GAURD (1992) NOT TO BE USED AS MILK (1990) DOG FOOD FAIL TO CONQUER THE UNIVERSE (1995) ROBOT MONSTER (1995) 10th ANNIVERSARY (1995) INFLATABLES (1999) CAKEFINDER GENERAL (2000) SWIM LIKE A CHIMNEY, SMOKE LIKE A FISH (2001) Giving a grand total of 173 original track recordings this is as complete a documentation of a bands career as has ever been attempted in one truly foul swoop. Not satisfied with the tired old cliche of the 'bonus' CD track, Pink Is The New Purple rather ridiculously boast a bonus album. THE PEDIGREE of the Band MR SIMON (organ & vocal) Also plays organ and sings with L’AUGMENTATION, who made John Peel’s Festive 50 last year. The single 'Strictly Hardcore' was a minor hit in 1997 and 'Hairstyle' would have been a huge hit if Ultimate Records hadn't folded the week the Blade found themselves performing it on Ant and Dec's SM:TV. After a short period licking their wounds the Blade re-grouped and recorded their third album 'Do you believe in the power of rock 'n roll?' More direct and snappy then 'Home Turf' or 'Drop The Bomb', 'Do you believe...' 's stuffed with killer rock 'n roll punches including, the single 'AC/DC' , 'Kiss My Ass', 'Who was the killa' and the storming live favourite 'Muthafukka'. The Independent on Sunday - June 2nd by Simon Price "Do you believe in the power of rock 'n' roll?" Goldblade's John Robb does, and by the time he's asked us for the twentieth time we do too. No fags or beer for John - the terrifyingly gym-hardened singer is as straight edge as they come, his only crutch being fast, loud and euphoric music. If you don't know John Robb, you'll know his face. The boundlessly energetic musician, author, producer, journalist, model and TV star is the Mancunian with the brush bristle quiff, comic book cheekbones, superhero physique (at Gold Blade gigs, you could lay bets on how many songs he'll last before whipping off his fur bomber jacket and showing off his pecs) and a cheeky glint in his eye, who always crops up on those I Love the Top Ten of 1977 punk shows. Gold Blade however, is his main project: a shamelessly fundamentalist collision of The Ramones, James Brown and The Stooges, typified by the anthemic Strictly Hardcore and new single AC/DC (which concludes with a cheeky Angus riff). Throughout their set, Robb comes across like a rock 'n' roll Billy Graham, bug-eyed and wired on adrenalin, slapping high-fives with the front row and bellowing exhortations to join him in his devotion. His band of tattooed rockabilly rebels are back by the tribal thump of not one but two drummers. Gold Blade may have their rivals in the testifying punk-rock-soul genre (notably The Make-Up and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), but you won't see a more inspiring, thrilling, enlivening show from any of them. The Garage, London. Friday 24th May 2002 Kerrang! - June 8th by Stevie Chick Ten seconds into the timebomb-ticking intro to 'Black Elvis' we realise, f**k, just how we've missed Gold Blade. Oh sure, there's been all manner of snakeoil salesmen beefing soul 'n' R&B up with überdecibelic guitar pain in their absence, and the Detroint garage renaissance was anticipated by the Blades's lamé-flecked devotionals. But no-one else delivers rock's gospel as surely, as totally, as Brother John Robb. His restless spirit courses through the urgency of the 'Blade's glamour-drenched strut: the sense that every moment of your life is all-or-nothing, to be lived to the utmost, and that rock 'n' roll can be your fuel, your salvation, our reason for living. And with rock 'n' roll as sweet as this, who'd doubt him? Yowling over a re-tuned Gold Blade, Robb delivers old favourites (the oily sin of 'Hairstyle') and future classics ('Who Was The Killa?') with equal, utter conviction, a prodigal figurehead for a ragtag generation of true believers. Be there! The Air Guitar Championships are coming home to its spiritual home of Birmingham, the second largest city in Britain, but the largest in terms of rock. And the promoters - Slack Sabbath - took their name from one of the greatest rock acts ever from there : Black Sababth. No other band towers over the history of heavy rock like Black Sabbath. Their brand of blunt, visceral proto-metal, forged in the furnace of Birmingham, England, saved rock 'n roll from the hippies, updated Phil Spector's wall of sound visions to Monoliths of Distortion hallucinations, and restored rock's all-important danger element in the process - catapulting the back-street roughs to the head of the class and exposing the world to their overpowering devils and decibels double-whammy. And we're coming to the rock venue THE OLD RAILWAY on Sunday 4th of August - to pay tribute to the masters of illusion and the blasters of destruction-Air Guitar where it matters - in the heart of rock n' roll. The tour has been rolling around the UK and 5 other countries [see the website at http://www.ukairguitar.com] and it is bringing chaos to wherever it stops. Tall or short, male or female, long-haired or buzz-cut, clad in khaki shorts and an oxford button-down or a vintage Manowar T-shirt and leather pants, barely old enough to get into the 21-and-over club or venerable enough to have seen Iggy and the Stooges live, the members of the mob all share one thing in common: Like faithful acolytes, all are drawn here for a ritual that has repeated itself every year for the past 8. It's magic. It's an addiction. It's anarchy in action. It's run by a Kentucky, USA born lad named Disastronaut. It's being held at the OLD RAILWAY a world-famous punk rock/heavy metal club in Birmingham. and there's no experience like it on earth. As the evening's starts a short, fat, stupidly dressed man with an accent originating in an farming town in northern Kentucky will take the stage. He will usually amuse the crowd by yelling at the sound guy to "turn the bloody mike on‹no, the OTHER mike!" and reminiscing about how he used to go see "the CLASH man, the bloody CLASH, man" for three-quarters of a pence back in the day. This isn't avant-garde stand-up comedy; it's Disastronaut, the promoter. Disastronaut is undoubtedly the most important person at UKAG, the hierophant-cum-emcee, if you will, for he is the one who runs the show, and it is in his care that the most holy of relics is placed: The Clipboard. If the UKAG regulars are a cult and Disastronaut is the high priest, then the clipboard is the sacred book. If you want to get up on stage and play your little heart out, you must sign your name therein. The night has a regular playlist of songs they do, and the best ones ("California Über Alles" and "Where Eagles Dare," for instance) are taken quickly. When Disastronaut drops the clipboard into the crowd, it's like a school of piranhas skeletonizing a cow. In seconds, nothing is left but the bloody scraps of second-rate Bon Jovi songs. Not that the process is unfair- Disastronaut actively encourages first-timers, who sometimes have to be gently tied up with ropes and thrown on stage by their friends. Besides, if you miss "Run to the Hills" this week, there's always next year. The club provides tab sheets, if you need 'em, and then all that's left is to wait 'til Disastronaut calls your name or song, get on stage, and cut loose. Of course, there are also regulars who have made almost a profession out of doing renditions of their favorite bands and songs. For example, there's an entire Brighton-based KISS army, led by the redoubtable Slack. Occupying his post front-and-center of the stage every year, slack is the unquestioned king of KISS covers and a damned fine performer to boot. There's also the winner last year - Satan Whoppercock! - who blew up his... - nuff said. But, the vast majority of people who crowd into UKAG and take the stage aren't would-be stars. They're the plebes of the music world, the music-buying public, like you or I. UKAG's appeal lies in this: For between three and five minutes, you are a rock star. All you dreams of being on stage, from the blinding lights to the screaming crowd singing along at the top of its lungs, are made reality. And, for Chrissakes, it doesn't matter how badly you sing, or how pretty your hair is‹it's about the spirit of the thing, and the cheering, clapping, singing-along crowd is nothing if not supportive. Some of the most electrifying performances are by guys who look like aspiring middle managers. Put them on stage, and their inner animal emerges. Gabba gabba hey, you're one of us. Some might claim that punk and metal are two completely separate social movements, and never should the twain meet. However, music historians two hundred years into the future, if they bother take note of pop culture as opposed to, say, Philip Glass, are not likely to draw such a distinction. In the long run, there's not much difference between the casual idiocy of Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" and the studied idiocy of Black Flag's "TV Party." Both are the primal scream of frustrated youth. Some might claim that amateur covers of kitchy metal songs and yesterday's punk anthems are by nature hopelessly derivative, but then, if originality was the litmus test for what "art" is, Andy Warhol's cans of soup wouldn't be hanging on the wall at the Museum of Modern Art. Disastronaut has given every die-hard metalhead a chance to relive the music of their youth, from the transcendent silliness of Black Sabbath to the mass-marketed glam of Poison, and claim it for their own. Similarly, it's given old-school punks the chance to share angry anthems as they were meant to be heard: Crammed against a nightclub stage, being shouted by the angry youth of America. Furthermore, by allowing everyday Joes (and Janes, and would-be Joeys) the chance to become rock stars, UKAG blows up the notion of what a rock staris. A rock star isn't the guy with the ten groupies riding in a limo down Hollywood Boulevard‹he could be the guy in the next cubicle. As Warhol himself once said, in the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. Owen has made superstars out of all of us. UKAG has the vibe of a rock concert, but it's infinitely better: Because this is for the people, and by the people, the crowd isn't just a passive audience‹the crowd is the show. Fuck the latest mass-marketed "alternative" crap the radio stations are trying to shove down our throats. If you need me, I'll be at the UK Air Guitar Championships. AIR GUITAR HISTORY The ancient art of Air guitar has been practiced by almost every girl slash boy in the bedrooms of yore. Ye Olde England [so the story goes] is the premiere place for imaginary fret-board stroking. Strap it on - the time has come..... The UK Air Guitar Championships were first kicked screaming out of the womb at the Lift Club, Brighton, in 1995, with a handfull of drunken revellers who thought it would be funny to see who could play the best air guitar. Over the years the Championships have condensed much of Rock’s energy, wanton-ness and outrageous performances – and crucially, a democratic access to the stage, so all kinds of people – with no other ability except the courage – can take the stage and be a Rock Star for 3 minutes. Disastronaut is, the long-suffering brother of genius real-life HEAVY metal guitarist Greg Reed. Being the brother of a Guitar King has its costs. Endless hours of Van Halen solos permeating through the walls, riffs cracking the ceiling plaster, fender amps shaking the house - all this has contributed to a love/hate relationship with the RIFF... so he decided to form a very silly and small event dedicated to that RIFF [ which for years has remained an urban myth]. In 1998/1999 The UK championships emerged screaming from an long underground labour into a lost ballroom [as documented in Loaded circa 1999] and it really kicked off. The next few years were gloriously unstoppableand it has grown with little encouragement - it is the bastard that is eating Rock itself.... We've all done it. Alone in the bedroom. Slip a cassette in the stereo. Prepare in front of the mirror. Strap it on or just pick it up and stroke it. Responsive to every single touch. The feel. The rush. The energy. Then wild gesticulations in mid-air. Head bangingly pleasing, Oh! The wrist action as the speed increases to the mind-bendingly beautiful solo. And then the power and fury of the climax. The roar of pleasure. The blinding light. Fingers trembling as sweat runs off the brow...YES! The time has come for you to go head to head with the best of them... With a sound somewhere between The Specials and The Doors, they aim to get the current music scene shakin’ it’s arse a bit more, rather than crying itself to sleep to Coldplay… Dog Food have been playing as a live unit for seventeen years, but until 2002 had release only one CD, which oddly enough was a collection of remasters of previously recorded tracks that had never been commercially released in the first place, and a biography of the first 100 performances, for a prohibitively large cover price... This year they made up for this desert of product by releasing 12 live albums, and two videos. There are plans afoot for another studio album, more live releases, another video and a second (possibly more afforable) book. All this may sound ridiculous within the usual music industry format, but then, frankly, Dog Food are. A description of their sound or intent has eluded everyone including the artists for nearly twenty years now, so to try to explain here would just be silly. THE MIDLANDS. WESTWOOD AND HONEY TOOK THEIR GUITAR AND BASS AND FORMED A TRIO WITH ONE LINDSEY PEARCE ON DRUMS. IT STARTED WITH COVERS DURING AFTER SCHOOL Rehearsals BUT DIDN'T TAKE LONG BEOFRE NEW, ORIGIONAL MATERIAL WAS ECHOING ROUND THE SCHOOL HALL. CRUDE, LOUD AND DIFFERENT. AS A CONSEQUECE OF LUGGING THEIR EQUIPMENT FROM SCHOOL REHERSALS TO THE LOCAL PUB GIGS, THE NOW WELL REHERSED THREESOME FOUND THEMSELVES AT THE BAR WITH JOHN DEVLIN AND PAUL HUNT. HAVING SEEN THEY GUYS IN OTHER BANDS, THE LADIES DECIDED TO STEAL THEM FOR THEIR OWN CAUSE, AND HARPIES WAS BORN. THE NEW LINE UP GOT STRAIGHT TO WORK AND RECORDED THEIR FIRST DEMO 'COME CLOSER' IN FEB 1999. A SMALL MAILOUT GENERATED POSITIVE REPSONSES, WHICH IN TURNHAD A POSTIVE EFFECT ON THE BAND. SOMETHING HAD TO FUCK IT UP AND SURE ENOUGH DEVLIN INJURED HIS HAND AND HE WAS OUT OF ACTION FOR MONTHS, FEARING HE MAY BE OUT OF THE ACTION FOR GOOD. TIME, THE HEALER, WAS KIND. A LOAD OF NEW SONGS, A HANDFUL OF GIGS AND BACK INTO THE STUDIO TO MAKE THE SECOND DEMO, 'GO FURTHER', IN APRIL 2000. HARDER, LOUDER, SMARTER. BY FEB 2001 THSOUND HAD EVOLVED, GIGS WERE COMING IN THICK AND FAST AND SPECIALIST SUPPORT FROM THIER THIRD DEMO, 'COLLECTIVE VOLITION' WAS AS HARDCORE AS THE NEW SOUND. THE BAND SENT THE DEMO INTO KERRANG!, IT GOT MISPlaced in the Rock weekly's office and they Only ended up winning Black Sabbaths backline in a competition. A good omen, surely?! PEARCE Decided to BOLT all the same AND MOVED TO MANCHESTER. sHit, no drummer. The best on the local scene at this point was luke johnson. he was playing full throttle in other local bands. He'd seen Harpies, harpies had seen him. harpies asked, johnson said yes and the even cruder, more rhythmic and current line up of harpies was established. It didn't take long for this set up to get in tune and a fourth demo, 'bluecloth' was recorded . Press are swaying to the sound of harpies and Radio one have shown unequivocal support, with Mary Anne Hobbs lording this as "the best demo of the year', and after Lamaqc heard and saw, he quickly had them in to record as session. XFm are now on the case and a claire sturgess session is pending. For more info and gigs contact Les Johnson @ A1A Management 01527 403128 Ross Warnock @ The Agency 0207 2783331 From the opening “So low” to the closing “L.S.S.” this is simply, a must hear. Anyone who says that the UK music scene is jaded, and moans about how we can’t produce any decent heavy bands that are up there with America's…well, This’ll prove you wrong. High praise indeed I know, but deserved. “So low” starts with an ominous 25 second intro, but then it just explodes into aural chaos. Metal riffs the size of trucks come out of nowhere before the powerhouse rhythm section takes over, thundering along like a conquering army while guitar feedback smothers the verses. When the guitar kicks back in the choruses, the pure hostility and unbridled aggression is combined with unholy and really, really pissed off vocals from the twin female vocalists. Which give the band a really odd vocal sound: somewhere between Slipknot and This Mortal Coil at times… “Replace” is far more mellow, far more restrained…until again it explodes in fury. Not so much taking the quiet-loud-quiet formula so much as replacing with loud-louder-even louder still, this is a non-stop in your face unapologetic fuck-you, with guitar. “Silence” is everything the title isn’t: 1 minute and 24 seconds of noise, perfectly condensed and honed into a little ball of hatred, with a perfect understanding of dynamics guaranteed to get the pit moving even if the gig was held in a graveyard. “Longshot” starts deceptively quiet, moody, menancing and brooding, like a riot about to happen; a riot between Slipknot and Sick of It All while This Mortal Coil look on and play ethereal guitar sounds. “Save” might be the weakest track here, but “L.S.S.” more than makes up for it…again a track that band like the over-rated and over-hyped Amen wish they were good enough to write. With a sound like Amen, Slipknot and Sick of it all stuck put into a sonic grinder and churned out the other side with etheral other-worldly vocals, a pounding rhythm section and with lyrics as menacing and intense as the policeman who accused me of loitering last night (while outside my own home), this is furious, finely honed hardcore-metal at its finest. Simply put: it’s the best UK band I’ve heard in a long long time, and makes Lost Prophets looks like the pop band that they are. I don’t know how long this has been around – All I know is that someone gave me a CD-R of it the other day with just a mobile phone number attached. So excuse the late review…and I know this review might be glowing, but if there was one band I'd ever want to leave my own band for, this is it. Fuck it, it deserves all the praise because, this demo alone has restored my faith in the fact that there's some great music out there. It’s the best demo I’ve heard is ages. Absolutely fucking brilliant. Sun 29 Gig of the Month! Blyth Power / Attila the Stockbroker's Barnstormer (4:00) 8pm Blyth Power: When Blyth Power’s first album came out in the spring of 1987 it was met with the kind of critical acclaim normally reserved for young people with bad haircuts and nothing to say. Fifteen years on the band still has no respect for the dictates of fashion and culture, and is taking advantage of this fact to ensure that there is at least one live act left on the UK scene that hasn't sold its soul to the company store. Since that first LP was released on All The Madmen Records, songwriter and singing drummer Joseph Porter has led the band through a constantly changing range of musical styles and tastes. Punk rock? Folk? No other band has flitted between such extremes with anything like the dexterity and barefaced cheek that Blyth Power has employed over the years. Who else would have dared to vent accordions upon a thousand shaven-headed German boys at the Festival Der Aggressiv Musik in Hanover? Who else could have rent the fabric of the Bracknell Folk Festival with distortion pedals and still been asked back for more? Who else has, by their very diversity, defied categorisation to the extent that no one to this day is prepared to even attempt to describe them in less than thirty words? Except Joseph that is. He generally uses ten: ‘A cross between The Clash, Steeleye Span, and The Rubettes’, which doesn’t really begin to do them justice, but is as close as anyone has ever come. ‘One of the prime features about Blyth, however, is their all-consuming individuality. They have a strikingly identifiable and personalised sound built basically around Joseph’s epic songs, with their colourful personnel, exotic story-lines and crashing, impassioned choruses.’ Colin Irwin Folk Roots So what, after eighteen years and nine studio albums, is the next move for the band? While so many others have ground on, churning out the same few tired ideas, Blyth Power have constantly changed their focus, always remaining as fresh and original as the day they were conceived. What do they sound like? Who can say, for they change from song to song, from day to day, and thanks to the constant input of new original material, and a prodigious back catalogue of the old, they are able to be 'present to any humour, all occasion; and change a visor swifter than a thought.’ Brand new stories mingle with tried and tested tunes from their long history, but that’s where Blyth Power have the edge over the competition – unlike those few of their peers who haven’t yet thrown in the towel, Blyth have no skeletons in the closet to be ashamed of. Having never tried to sound like anyone else, they don’t have to try and deny it in the face of damning evidence to the contrary. No flares, no curly perms, no passing fashions. Just their eclectic fancies and a deep-rooted awareness of their own roots culture that finds a unique expression through the wry and often incisive lyrics of the band’s songs. ‘It's a brazenly distinctive sound that forcibly overrides the personal styles of the musicians involved. Stick Eric Clapton in that band on guitar and he'd come out sounding…well, like a member of Blyth Power.’ Colin Irwin Folk Roots The current crop of new songs worming their way into the serried ranks of the Blyth Power set take the unsuspecting listener from the grey wastes of the North Sea at the height of the Cod War, to the House of Commons, where an unwilling Prime Minister is resigning her office. Bomber Harris falls in love, Robert Graves goes up to Oxford, and Queen Mary Tudor loses her grip and starts burning people she doesn't even know. At the same time there are still trains, there is still cricket, and all the time there are still the eminently hummable tunes and rousing choruses that have become the band's trademark. “I’ve written over a hundred songs since that first album was released,” says Mr Porter, “and I like to keep track of them all. It seems a shame that some of them haven’t been out and about for so long, so part of the current operation is to dust off a number of the more venerable and rework them.” The latest episode in the band’s journey to the centre of their own roots involves long standing members Annie Hatcher (keyboards/vocals) and Bambi (bass guitar) being joined by Mr Steven Cooper of Maccabees fame on guitar (well, anything with strings actually). The current crop of new songs is mingling with the ghosts of Blyth past to give the band a breadth and versatility such as they have never had before. With a new recording under their belt, Blyth Power are looking forward to doing what they have been doing best since time immemorial, and making sure that Mr Cooper gets some serious diesel traction under his belt. Performance poetry, page poetry, verse, rants, songs, instrumentals, stories; love, anger, politics, satire; medieval chamber punk! Analogy: a synthesis of Hilaire Belloc, The Clash and a sixteenth century troubadour. Attila has spent the last twenty years performing his work across the world at literary and music festivals, rock venues, arts centres, pubs, universities, schools, folk clubs and punk squats in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the US, Euskadi, France, SCandinavia, Austria - and more improbably in Romania, Bulgaria and a hotel basement in Stalinist Albania. He's created his own global network, organises most of his own gigs (and many for other performers at various one-off events and festivals and at the regular spoken word/music events he runs at the Barn Theatre in his native Southwick) and is very proud to have earned a living as a poet since 1982. He's released 13 music/poetry albums in 5 countries and 3 books of poems, 'Cautionary Tales for Dead Commuters' (Unwin Paperbacks, 1985) and 'Scornflakes' (Bloodaxe, 1992). Attila's third book, 'The Rat-tailed Maggot and Other Poems' was published in 1998. The two latest CD releases are detailed above. He's written for many national and local publications including The Guardian, Time Out,NME,Sounds Magazine, The Independent...done loads of radio and TV work...but writing the words and music for his own performances and those of his band is what inspires him most. Attila loves humour (wit, wickedness, satire, subversion) and hates 'comedy' (bland jokes about Seventies TV, adverts for undrinkable beer, endless moronic game shows, corporate gravy train spotting). In 1994 Attila formed his first-ever band, BARNSTORMER, combining his two great musical loves - medieval music and punk! - and giving him the chance to use his classical violin training and play loads of his favourite medieval instruments (crumhorn anyone?). The band released their debut album, 'The Siege of Shoreham' in 1996, and gig regularly all over the place alongside Attilas's solo shows. The new Barnstormer album 'Just One Life' was released in October 2000. All Birmingham based, except Kevin who is from Walsall, the pop punk band are one of the UKs most successful exports, with large followings in the USA and particularly the Far East. This is especially so in Japan where they have enjoyed chart success and toured several times, with the next tour scheduled for next Spring. Compared to the success enjoyed on the other side of the world, Skimmer are still relatively unknown on these shores, something they hope to put right with the release of their new CD, 'Still', which comes out on Crackle on October 28th. Kevin says "It can seem a bit strange that we sell out venues across Japan, and get lots of attention over there, yet still be overlooked in our own country, but I'm sure the new album will help to redress that". Well it makes sense to us ! Being just a bit too young in the '70's, but being brought up on punk and reggae we were marooned in the '80's with, as Sean McGowan put it "2 faggots & a keyboard", except of course for the Pogues! Then going to parties that were waking up from dub & embracing dance music. Spending the night dancing to sound systems with the folk tunes still stuck in your head. Then finding out that 5 or 6 hundred years ago there were outbreaks of dancing fever all over Europe, where they danced for days on end to repetitive drum beats played with folk music. In Italy they called it Tarantism. It all make sense, rather than an incongruous mix of styles, all these influences have a common thread. TARANTISM on the one hand, use the strengths of passionate London & Galway vocalists and strong whistle styles, as well as using "acoustic sampling", taking the sounds back from the DJs. Up until recently TARANTISM have been concentrating on playing live at many European venues & festivals, including Glastonbury, V99, Oeral arts, Edinborough and the like, with bands such as The Levellers, Zion Train, Afro-Celt sound System, Head Mix Collective & Shooglenifty, and acoustically with Kangaroo Moon, Kathryn Tickell & Dick Gaughan. They have an album (6 Miles Below) and are on Continental Drifts "Sounds From The Acoustic Ground "compilation, so far the best example of acoustic meets dance. TARANTISM have taken this one step further with their new album (The Cutting Edge of the Fluff Zone ), due for release in May 2001, and have incorporated all sorts of people from the folk, world and dance music genres to create something of far reaching appeal. The natural progression for acoustic sampling is to mixit with digital beats and dance music technology . TARANTISM have done just this taking samples from their forthcoming album and combining the full sound system vibe with live performance from solo artists and vocalists. This creates an event that leads an audience through acoustic music to live band to Sound system. HERMAN DUNE are Paris-based Swedish brothers David-Ivar Herman Dune and Andre Herman Dune. If you want to know their sound think Will Oldham, Neil Young, Sebadoh, Lambchop etc..... “This year’s most criminally overlooked gem, ‘Turn Off The Light’ – a magnificently grimy debut that recalls the Palace Brothers, Belle and Sebastian and rather more bizarrely, Serge Gainsbourg” (NME) “Sparse as scrubland, cool as a low-budget indie movie, sad and childlike and utterly hypnotic” (TimeOut) Jason Ensa The roots of this band were made on a chance trip to Paris by Jason back in 1988. Busking around the city he met fellow busker Roberto were they both immediately clicked and decided on the spot to form a band. Roberto packed up and moved to England where the band was then formed. After several years in the wilderness ‘The Lobsters of Freedom’ emerged again with Roberto as Jason's right hand man, this time offering music to reach a wider audience. Imagine a blend of Prince, Nick Drake, Bowie, The Kinks and Augustus Pablo and this will give you an insight into the creative world of Jason Ensa. Widely regarded as one of Birmingham's finest unsigned artists, he delivers a unique and powerful blend of 'soul-rock-pop' Passionate and potent, his performances are laced with raw spirit with a delivery that is both honest and engaging. Having performed extensivly across Birmingham's live, underground music scene and other venues including Ronnie Scotts, Jason's dynamic and layered music is a definite must for any ears. "This is music to awake the most lost of souls and medicine for the sick. It’s music to make you feel real and sounds that signify the coming of a new era.” (SolarCreations) "A welcome breath of fresh air heralding the coming of summer and all things groovy, fantastic tunes - a huge talent." Annie Hatcher's keyboards and backing vocals rise to any occasion, with pianos, organs, and the most convincing accordion sound ever to come out of a plastic oblong with keys. Guitarist Steven Cooper switches between the electric and acoustic guitar as required. His experienced backing vocals add to the harmony, and best of all, he doesn't mess about or noodle pointlessly onstage like so many people when confronted with a guitar, a stage, and a room full of people. Drumming stage front, Joseph Porter's distinctive English voice can switch from a rising strident roar to a soulful croon in the couple of bars it takes to change from verse to chorus, while his drumming, thankfully retarded by twenty years singing in the saddle, is crisp, precise and uncomplicated, while the diminutive size of his drumkit prevents him from succumbing to the drummer's traditional temptation to make a racket like a herd of wildebeest falling downstairs. Add to this the solid lines of his bass-playing sidekick Bambi, economical, dependable, and equally at home with all moods and tempos, and you have a rhythm section that really means rhythm, and underscores the tuneful intelligent songs with a danceable beat that never allows itself to be interrupted by self-indulgence or gratuitous showmanship. 'This is the band had the art born with them.' A team in harness working for a common goal of excellence. A unique musical experience, and a damned good night out for one and all. With their twentieth anniversary just over the horizon, Blyth Power remains one of the most original and innovative bands around. Formed in late 1983 by singer/drummer Joseph Porter, the band has gone from strength to strength, and with the release in 2002 of their latest collection, On the Viking Station, demonstrated to all who heard it that not only was the band still firing on all cylinders, but that they had entered into a new confidence and maturity that simply has to be heard to be believed. Drawing on influences as far flung as the 1973 Cod War and the depredations of the Baader-Meinhof gang, Blyth Power present an updated version of folk lore that has been sadly missing from the musical chronicle of our times. >From the Falklands to the Arctic Circle, history has continued to be made, and it is through the medium of Her Majesty's ships, and the moral corruption of the House of Commons, rather than jolly butchers and farmer's daughters that the band seeks to imbue their own brand of folk-rock with an authenticity and authority lacking in so many of their peers. Who else will write the folk songs of today for the folk singers of tomorrow? If folk song is to survive in the electronic age as a viable means of recording the infamies and errors of our era, then songwriters need to sit up and ask themselves 'What will folk music do next?' The answer is here in what it is already doing, and which it will continue to do, in the band's never-ending schedule of tours and recordings. 'One of the prime features about Blyth, however, is their all-consuming individuality. They have a strikingly identifiable and personalised sound built basically around Joseph's epic songs, with their colourful personnel, exotic story-lines and crashing, impassioned choruses.' Colin Irwin Folk Roots What does the band sound like? How long is a piece of string? With a catalogue of 125 original compositions to choose from, the band are able to adapt their set to suit their surroundings. With a whole range of both acoustic and electric songs, Blyth Power can settle comfortably into the tidy seated arena of an art centre and discuss matters on intimate terms, with precision and definition. Just as easily they can select a programme of up-tempo numbers to get the dancers tumbling over each other in a smelly rock-club basement, or reeling in a wet Marquee after a long day at the cider tent. Present to all humours and any occasion, 'they change a visor swifter than a thought.' There is no fixed set of songs. Each audience is presented with a tailor made selection that can vary from the gentle acoustic arpeggios of Burning Joan to the full-on punk rock assault of songs like Carlisle and Sometimes I Wonder. There is everything in between as well, and it is with a sly sense of mischief that the band will take delight in taunting the least folk-oriented crowd with the sound of accordions, or slipping in a raucous anthem to enliven the atmosphere of a balmy country fayre. 'It's a brazenly distinctive sound that forcibly overrides the personal styles of the musicians involved. Stick Eric Clapton in that band on guitar and he'd come out sounding.well, like a member of Blyth Power.' Colin Irwin Folk Roots But overriding everything is the breadth and content of the lyrics, which Mr Porter claims are his first love, and his most cherished care. Irony and subtext mingle with plain-speaking and historical metaphor in brilliant tapestry of colour and irreverent speculation. Will Charles succeed to the throne? Will politicians ever keep their pants on? Why was Mary Tudor so uncouth as to burn total strangers, and will the legacy of sweat and boredom left in the desert by the Templar Knights be rekindled in the Kevlar helmets and SA80s of the modern armies bound for Baghdad? Anyone can make music, but not everyone can find the time to make every word count for a dozen, or to unravel the intricacies of human fallibility with a perception that rarely falls short of sympathetic. '.Mary's Mad Army, full of English imagery and nursery rhyme connotation, or Armstrong Goes to War, an acoustic blast of folksiness with ironic snatches of militaristic melodies and a great singalong chorus telling the tale of a devout coward who made it to the rank of captain.' 'Talking Points, Not Tragedies', Sist's debut despite their five-year history, does its best to capture this live intensity, and occasionally succeeds. 'Chinese Whispers' is an anthemic shout-along that undoubtedly has Sist's fan base in their native Birmingham breaking out their best pogo moves, whilst 'Misguided Thought Process' is a slow-building number that eventually erupts into a tightly controlled thrash-about, only to recede back into tune before its climax. Sist's only problem (and it's a problem shared by many new UK bands) is that 'post-hardcore' currently translates as 'mediocre guitar band content to copy a few trend setting US acts'. Sist aren't bad by any means, and are infinitely preferable to the commercialised emo of The Used et al, but they're too similar to a number of bands doing the toilet circuit to deserve wholehearted recommendation. The tour has been rolling through 18 dates around the UK, Ireland and eight other countries (see the website at http://www.ukairguitar.com) and it is bringing chaos to wherever it stops. Tall or short, male or female, long-haired or buzz-cut, tall hat or wooly hat, clad in khaki shorts and an oxford button-down or a vintage Manowar T shirt and leather pants, barely old enough to get into the 21-and-over club or venerable enough to have seen Iggy and the Stooges live, the members of the mob all share one thing in common: like faithful acolytes, all are drawn here for a ritual that has repeated itself every year for the past eight. It's magic. It's an addiction. It's anarchy in action. It's by the people for the people. It's run by a Kentucky, USA born lad named Disastronaut. It's being held at The Old Railway in Birmingham and there's no experience like it on earth. As the evening starts a short, fat, stupidly dressed man with an accent originating in an farming town in northern Kentucky will take the stage. He will usually amuse the crowd by yelling at the sound guy to 'turn the bloody mic on... no, the OTHER mic!' and reminiscing about how he used to go see 'the CLASH man, the bloody CLASH, man' for three-quarters of a pence back in the day. The night has a regular playlist of songs they do, and the best ones ('California Über Alles' and 'Where Eagles Dare', for instance) are taken quickly. When Disastronaut drops the clipboard into the crowd, it's like a school of piranhas skeletonising a cow. In seconds, nothing is left but the bloody scraps of second-rate Bon Jovi songs. Not that the process is unfair Disastronaut actively encourages first-timers, who sometimes have to be gently tied up with ropes and thrown on stage by their friends. Besides, if you miss 'Run to the Hills' this week, there's always next year. There's also the winner last year, Satan Whoppercock (!), who blew up his... 'nuff said. But the vast majority of people who crowd into UKAG and take the stage aren't would-be stars. They're the plebes of the music world, the music-buying public, like you or I. UKAG's appeal lies in this: For between three and five minutes, you are a rock star. All you dreams of being on stage, from the blinding lights to the screaming crowd singing along at the top of its lungs, are made reality. And, for Chrissakes, it doesn't matter how badly you sing, or how pretty your hair is it's about the spirit of the thing, and the cheering, clapping, singing-along crowd is nothing if not supportive. Some of the most electrifying performances are by guys who look like aspiring middle managers. Put them on stage, and their inner animal emerges. Gabba gabba hey, you're one of us. Some might claim that punk and metal are two completely separate social movements, and never should the twain meet. However, music historians two hundred years into the future, if they bother to take note of pop culture as opposed to, say, Philip Glass, are not likely to draw such a distinction. In the long run, there's not much difference between the casual idiocy of Iron Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' and the studied idiocy of Black Flag's 'TV Party'. Both are the primal scream of frustrated youth. Some might claim that amateur covers of kitschy metal songs and yesterday's punk anthems are by nature hopelessly derivative, but then, if originality was the litmus test for what 'art' is, Andy Warhol's cans of soup wouldn't be hanging on the wall at the Museum of Modern Art. Furthermore, by allowing everyday Joes (and Janes, and would-be Joeys) the chance to become rock stars, UKAG blows up the notion of what a rock star is. A rock star isn't the guy with the ten groupies riding in a limo down Hollywood Boulevard he could be the guy in the next cubicle. As Warhol himself once said, in the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. Owen has made superstars out of all of us. UKAG has the vibe of a rock concert, but it's infinitely better: Because this is for the people, and by the people, the crowd isn't just a passive audience the crowd is the show. As a generation growing up in 20th century technology took many rapid turns throughout our early years, the next new thing was always just around the corner, giving toys and computers a very short life span before they had to be upgraded to the newest and shiniest model. Moving in to the next century the constant quest for the latest technology hasn't let up, but it has given way to nostalgia leading to a fascination with retro toys and technology. The artists / musicians have been selected based on their relevance to the central theme, each of the artists, in ways unique from one another, source and collect existing sounds/ objects / imagery to be modified and re-issued as a new sound or product.
